Figure Photography
The human face is the favorite material for figure photography. The wide access to digital technologies and
cameras now makes figure photography part of popular culture. If you have a camera, you must have shot hundreds if
not thousands of photos of yourself, your family and friends in all sorts of circumstances. There are various
aspects and perspectives that ought to be considered in relation with figure photography. The amateur captures
pictures to tell a story or to give support to a personal memory.
We usually take lots of photos when we are away from home, when traveling or when our children go through the
early stages of evolution. Then, there are the special events and life moments when we make photos: birthdays,
holidays, weddings and various other celebrations. Figure photography subtly pampers our ego, but this sounds too
philosophical to even consider discussing.
Another common use for figure photography is in photo-journalism. Think of the snapshots you see in magazines
and newspapers with people in various relevant circumstances. Such photos support the story in the published
article. They have a relevance for the reader who better processes the information. Tabloids make extensive use of
figure photography, particularly as celebrities are caught with their guard down.
The more refined aspect of figure photography comes with fine art photography. The human face is incredibly
expressive: it is the one to render all the emotions and the thinking pattern in the individual. Whether it's a
frown, a smile or a neutral look, something special is there in every snapshot of a human face. Artistic
photography relies on spontaneous moments with photos taken on the spur of the moment. But there are also staged
photos where makeup, hairstyle and clothes play a highly important part too. Figure photography thus often overlaps
with glamor photography particularly for female models.
The human face has been transposed in figure photography in so many ways throughout the years that it is
impossible not to identify a whole range of trends and currents. However, figure photography has never known the
professional and the amateurish extent that it knows these days. The technological boom with all the appliances
that we now have available, has changed the grounds for many arts not only for photography. However, due to the
fact that it relies on the camera first and foremost, this domain is liable to subtle and complex changes all the
time.
