Photography Contests
Photography contests offer great opportunities for budding photographers. However, before you enter any
competition, you should carefully analyze the judging criteria and learn how to maximize the chances of winning.
Awards usually look great on the presentation map and they increase the value of the portfolio, convincing big
companies to entrust photo-shooting contracts to no-names. There is a host of elements evaluated in
photography contests from colors and lighting to correct exposure, balance of composition and sharpness.
Read the terms of conditions of photography contests so that you meet all the entry criteria. If you choose an
online competition, you have to pay attention to how you enter the images. Sometimes lots of pictures get passed
over because the contestants do not pay attention to the rules and regulations. Then, you need to enter good
looking, sharp photos that can be analyzed against any standards of quality. Do not enter pics with focus mistakes
or which look blurry because they will be eliminated in the early stages of photography contests.
There is one condition where blurs are accepted: when the blurring is an artistic strategy enhancing the subject
and increasing the value of the photo. If the pictures look soft or slightly out of focus, they will usually
receive a low score and exit the competition. The exposure is one other criterion strictly evaluated in photography
contests. Carefully choose the photos you enter in competition: they should not be underexposed or show other
exposure mistakes.
Artistic, creative photos are held in high esteem, but this also depends on the nature of the photography
contests. Some competitions are goal oriented, searching for good photographers with aptitudes and feeling for a
specific kind of photography. It is difficult to compare figure photos with architectural photography and wildlife
photography. This is why most photography contests follow some theme or topic, so that there is common ground on
which to judge the creations.
For digital photos, a bit of brushing up with a photo editing program can seriously increase the value of the
photos. It nevertheless takes good knowledge and skill to enhance the artistic side of a photography while reducing
the downsides. It is more difficult to modify film photos that are scanned and transfered to a computer, because
the quality is different. However, you should also be careful on whether photography contests require film or
digital photos, and comply with the rules.
