Photography Props
Very common objects can easily convert into photography props if you know how to use them efficiently. A photo
gains a lot in value because of props, but sometimes you just have to know how to enliven the photo. The idea is
that the photography props are just artistic enhancers, they should not divert the attention from the subject.
There are several conditions that photography props have to meet in order to prove useful for photo shooting.
As we've already mentioned, they should not overpower the subject. Then, props ought to support the story in the
photo. Last but not least, there should be a match between the subject and the photography props, in terms of size,
pattern, colors and the like. This means that photography props come in the shadow of the subject, supporting
whatever topic you choose for the picture. If these conditions are not met, the photographic attempt may not be as
successful as intended. The wrong photography props could create imbalanced pictures, they could take light away or
create too much contrast.
Flowers, furniture items, stools, benches, seasonal items like Easter eggs, pumpkins or Santa hats, sports
equipment, flags, blankets and stuffed animals or toys are just a few examples of popular photography props. It all
depends on what you are trying to accomplish and what the subject of the photo is. The photos used for commercials
will most likely have the promotional items used as photography props. In such cases, the subject and the props are
equally important, because the message of the advertisement depends on both.
Kids and children are usually photographed using toys, personal objects or cute umbrellas as photography props.
Sometimes the cradle, a parent's arms or a nice flower complements the picture enhancing the subject. For
spontaneous photo shooting, a heart that you draw in the sand or the ocean's waves are enough to make the message
powerful and relevant for the situation. It is really beautiful to be able to improvise and create something nice
with as little as possible.
As for more specialized photography props, we can easily refer to the pictures taken for cookery books or for
gastronomy magazines. Just think what table settings you can create and how food can be put into context. Sometimes
a glass, a napkin, a fork or a flower are enough to complement a cake or some dish you take a photo of. Good food
pics are really appetite stimulants; yet, they have to be taken right away when the food is ready, so that nothing
of the quality of dishes is wasted.
